About Easy-BILAG
Easy-BILAG is a simplified paper case report form for recording SLE disease activity using the BILAG-2004 index. It reorganises the index into a streamlined, colour-coded format with embedded glossary definitions and data-driven ordering of the most frequently encountered items, making it faster and easier for raters to complete accurately in routine clinic, audit and research use.
Easy-BILAG was developed at the University of Leeds by Dr Lucy Marie Carter and Professor Edward Vital, together with Professor Caroline Gordon, Dr Chee-Seng Yee, Professor Ian Bruce, Professor David Isenberg and Dr Sarah Skeoch. In validation testing across diverse clinical settings, Easy-BILAG achieved higher scoring accuracy (96.7% vs 87.8%) and faster completion times than the standard BILAG-2004 documentation format.
The tool, its development and its validation are described in full in the original paper:
Paper copies of Easy-BILAG can be used freely for education. The University of Leeds provides free academic and research licences for non-commercial, university-affiliated use, and can discuss tailored licensing agreements for commercial and industry use, via its licensing portal.
